Two people allegedly broke into the Hanover Fuel Stop, stole an ATM machine and armloads of cigarettes and candy bars, but as they were leaving, Martins Ferry Police officers showed up.

A high-speed chase through Martins Ferry ended when the suspects smashed into a utility pole, snapping it in half, and leaving live power lines draped around the police cruiser, so police couldn’t get out.

The getaway car driver jumped out and ran into the woods. The passenger, 59-year-old Salvin Cunningham of Cleveland, was arrested and taken to OVMC then UPMC in Pittsburgh. Police said both men were dressed all in black, including black masks.

The ATM, cigarettes and candy bars were all recovered from the car, along with a bag of crack cocaine. Authorities are still looking for the driver.
