A sewer pipe failed, resulting in a sinkhole behind the Jefferson County Jail that spans more than 14 feet wide and 17 feet deep.

Last night, that concern was addressed before the Steubenville city council.

It’s a problem that has a high price tag to repair. As of right now, the project is estimated to cost $150,000.

Repairs include placing a smaller pipe inside the larger, 36-inch pipe. Crews will then work on the collapsed area.

Another concern is over safety, as the railroad tracks are just feet away.

The city hopes to have a plan of action along with a not-to-exceed cost for the project on Friday.
