Bad news came Monday for those counting on the Wheeling Suspension Bridge to reopen soon, as Wheeling officials heard back from the state.
The bridge will remain closed long-term according to the West Virginia Secretary of Transportation.
It’s not certain how long the bridge will remain closed. It has been closed since September after the Department of Highways wished to preserve it from overweight vehicles.
Elliott proposed multiple ideas to the state, but they were denied for now.
This comes less than a week after Wheeling Island residents were left frustrated with the DOH when no one from the department came to the crime watch meeting to discuss the future of the bridge.
Now, residents will have to consider long-term changes to their travels.
Wheeling officials are asking the Department of Transportation to prioritize the upcoming bridge repair projects.
