A traveling teacher from the Buckeye Local School District is in custody awaiting sexual misconduct charges involving actions with two juvenile students, which did not happen on school grounds.

Ronald “Shane” Burkhead, 41, was arrested by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department Monday night. He is being held at the Jefferson County Justice Center.

Buckeye Local Schools Superintendent, Kim Leonard, issued a statement regarding Burkhead:

“Ensuring the safety and care of students in our schools is our top priority.

“We are aware of the arrest of Ronald Burkhead, a teacher in our district, and like our
entire school community, we are deeply concerned. We are taking this situation very
seriously. Buckeye Local Schools has a strict zero-tolerance policy for sexual contact
between employees and students, and we enforce that policy vigorously.

“As soon as we were notified, we acted swiftly to suspend Mr. Burkhead from all duties,
including removal from school property and all school-related activities, and to forbid
contact with students or staff. Additionally, the district immediately reported the arrest
to the Ohio Department of Education. We are cooperating fully with the prosecutor and
local law enforcement and will continue to do so as the investigation continues.

“While we are highly troubled by what has been alleged to date, we cannot speculate
on the ongoing case. It is our responsibility to preserve the privacy of those involved and
to assure the case can proceed.”

Sheriff Fred Abdalla will hold a press conference at 11 a.m.
