After months of pending litigation against the city of Weirton, a lawsuit has been dropped, and a new contract approved for the Weirton Firefighters Union.
The lawsuit was filed in the summer and it’s been a gradual process of negotiating since then.
The new contract for Weirton firefighters harbors more staffing, a pay increase and a change in the work schedule. The contract passed unanimously Monday night at city council.
The biggest priority was making the department safer with more manpower.
Some other changes will be a 12 percent pay increase for one year, along with a different work rotation.
To reach the agreed upon amount of manpower, the city plans to apply for the SAFER grant in 2020.
