A two-story structure in the 800 block of Washington Ave. in Martins Ferry is a complete loss, but the occupant of the house is alive, thanks to a neighbor who was the former fire chief.

Upon witnessing the fire, Tom Kelly, Jr. called 911 around 6:40 a.m. and proceeded to help the occupant evacuate the structure before the Martins Ferry fire/police departments and EMS arrived on scene.

The structure is deemed to be a loss, but with the help of the former chief, the occupant is facing non-life-threatening injuries. The origin of the fire, as well as the cause, is still under investigation.
