One firefighter was taken to the hospital after he was injured at the scene of a fire Monday evening.

The fire sparked around 6:30 p.m. in the 300-block of Whitely Street in Bridgeport.

The injured firefighter suffered from cardiac issues and was taken to a nearby hospital.

Bridgeport Fire Chief Mark Subasic said the fire began in the kitchen area. It took several hours for crews to knock down the flames, but around 9 p.m. the fire seemed to be under control.

No one was inside the home at the time of the fire and authorities are unsure if anyone permanently lives in the duplex.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
