When it comes to tax documents, everybody wants to ensure that their personal information, like address and social security number, doesn’t get into the hands of the wrong person.

But that’s exactly what happened to about 350 retired employees in the city of Wheeling.

In a statement Tuesday, the city said it accidentally sent out confidential tax information to the city’s pension recipients.

The city uses the payroll services company Paychex, and the envelopes were mailed late last week.

The city is working with the company to provide all of those affected with a free year of identity and fraud protection services.

Officials are asking recipients who received the forms to return them to the Human Resources Office, Room 301, of the City-County Building.
