“Swatting” — where someone calls in to the 911 center to report a fake crime – is becoming an issue in Belmont County.

The Belmont County 911 Center received one just a few days ago, with a caller claiming to kill his wife and two children. He said he’d shoot any officer that approaches.

That call sent Bridgeport Police to an Aetnaville home, but when they arrived, they found nothing.

Belmont County Sheriff Dave Lucas said the internet is usually to blame in swatting cases, many even involve stolen identities.

The sheriff says if someone is threatening you online, make sure you report it. That’s one way to prevent swatting.
