City Police have charged a local man with robbery in connection with a purse snatching outside Kroger Friday night.

According to police reports, 38-year-old Joseph M. Bednarek, who has no fixed address, was found with a purse reported taken from a local woman a short time earlier.

The woman told police she was in the store’s parking lot at about 11:35 p.m. when a man attempted to grab her purse. The woman said when she resisted and yelled for help, the man told her he would shoot her if she didn’t cooperate.

The woman said she fell to the ground and the man fled with her purse.

According to police reports, another man in the lot pursued the purse snatcher to nearby Harding Stadium. The man said the thief climbed over the fence and appeared to have hurt himself.

The man said when the thief threatened to shoot him also, he turned back.

Police responding to the incident said they found Bednarek, who matched the woman’s description, with her purse and following a brief chase on foot, apprehended him.

Police said Bednarek was treated at Trinity Medical Center West for injuries believed to have occurred in the earlier pursuit before being booked into the Jefferson County Jail.
