Bridgeport Mayor David Smith, who is accused of stealing more than $20,000 from the village, has relinquished his duties as mayor during an investigation.

Smith faces tampering with records, theft in office, and conflict of interest charges.

Council President Marvin Husarik will take over day-to-day operations.

The state auditor’s office announced the allegations against Smith on Tuesday and he’s scheduled for arraignment today.
