A fire in the southern end of Jefferson County raised some eyebrows after firefighters found what they thought was a meth lab.
It happened at a home on Luka Road in Rayland around 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.
Responding to the scene were crews from Yorkville, Tiltonsville and Rayland.
On arrival, officials say there was no fire on the outside of the building, but there was heavy smoke. Once they went inside, though, they found a small fire in the attic.
After they put the fire out, what they found alarmed them. One-gallon containers that had some sort of liquid inside them alongside what appeared to be propane tanks.
Yorkville Assistant Fire Chief Nathan Schaal decided to call the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office to come take a closer look and get a second opinion. They were able to confirm the containers were in fact not propane tanks. Even so, the fire still remains suspicious since no one lives at the home and the power was turned off.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
