Officials have confirmed a worker at the ArcelorMittal Plant in Weirton was hit between two coils on Thursday morning and later died.
It happened around 8:40.
The man, whose identity has not been released, was operating the crane and able to get himself out before emergency crews arrived.
An ArcelorMittal spokesman offered a statement:
“We are saddened to confirm that an employee suffered injuries while operating a crane at ArcelorMittal Weirton this morning. the employee was transferred to a local hospital and then passed away as a result of the injuries.”
The company, the United Steelworkers, and state and federal agencies are investigating.
The company said it extends sympathies to the family and friends and added:
“ArcelorMittal strives to ensure every employee returns home form work safely. We are deeply troubled by today’s incident and will make every effort to understand the cause and prevent re-occurrence.”
