A fire broke out on Wheeling Island on Sunday afternoon. While crews were able to get the blaze under control, a local councilperson in that ward said the blaze is emblematic of a greater concern.

An investigation is underway into what caused the fire at 315 S. York St.

The call came in at 2:43 p.m. Crews from the Wheeling Fire Department arrived on the scene to find the structure fully engulfed.

Watching crews fight the fire was Wheeling Second Ward Council Representative Ben Seidler. Seidler said he’s concerned about the conditions of homes on the Island like the one that burned.

He said it’s a perfect example of the other houses on the island that are not up to code. With many of them being abandoned or owned by someone not living in the area, Seidler says it’s one of the things that they need to clean up, especially with how common they are.

Two cats were rescued from the home. Ohio County Animal Control was called to care for the animals. There were no injuries or damage to neighboring structures.
