Construction on the Wellsburg-Brilliant bridge is expected to start sometime in July and the bridge would also feature a shared-use bike path, the only one of its kind in the Ohio Valley.
The shared path would connect to the Yankee and Pioneer Trails in Wellsburg, no word yet if there’s a direct link from the bridge to the Washington Pike or WV Ste. Rte. 27.
In March of last year, Steubenville Councilwoman Kimberly Hahn reported that West Virginia Division of Highway officials anticipated potentially closing the Market Street Bridge to vehicle traffic and only maintaining it as a pedestrian bridge if the Brilliant-Wellsburg connector opened.
Mike Paprocki, director, Brooke-Hancock-Jefferson Metropolitan Planning Commission says the Market Street Bridge is going through inspection this week and so far there are no problems with it and that it is inspected every 6 months.
Barring any weather delays, inspection on the Market St. Bridge will finish today at 5p.m.
