Developers are working to bring industry into Brooke and Hancock counties.
There are 1,100 acres owned by Frontier Group of Companies that are being prepared for businesses to occupy.
To expedite that process, the Business Development Corporation is applying for a $600,000 grant from the U.S. EPA at the end of January.
BDC Director Pat Ford says that the quicker that these sites can be demolished and repurposed the more likely businesses will locate to the Ohio Valley.
The areas involved stretch from Main Street downtown to Brown’s Island.
There are plans to renovate the former ArcelorMittal property, including the large building often referred to as the B.O.P. on Route 2.
There are also plans for office and retail space near Main Street, next to Harmon Creek. In addition, there is 750,000 square feet of land for development on Brown’s Island.
It will take a few months before the BDC knows if it is awarded the grant. Officials also plan to apply for infrastructure grants.
