Belmont County Soil and Water Conservation District Touts Successful Year and Future

The Belmont Soil and Water Conservation District had a successful 2018 and looks forward to doing even greater things in 2019. Several events on tap for this year include a tree planting event at the Belmont County Fairgrounds, a partnership with the Sargus Juvenile Detention Center to implement composting and raised bed gardens, and Camp Marshmallow, an event to teach local youth about the outdoors. Three-Day Power Outage Comes to an End for Some Wellsburg Residents

A Wellsburg family went for 3 days without electricity, and said they had no assistance from the county. Although the lights are now on for the affected residents on Bealls Ridge Rd., they were frustrated by their lack of electricity for several days; however, the county said it offered help to those in need. Wellsburg resident Janette Henthorn said her mother lost power Sunday afternoon, and was in the dark until 6:00 p.m. Wednesday – three days with no power and no water. West Virginia Senate Passes Bill to Raise Minimum Tobacco Use Age to 21

The West Virginia Senate has passed a bill that would raise the state’s minimum legal age for using tobacco products from 18 to 21. The Senate passed the bill on a 20-14 vote Wednesday. The bill covers all tobacco and vaping products. A similar bill is pending in a House committee. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, West Virginia has among the highest youth smoking rates in the nation. A similar bill died last year in a Senate committee. Powhatan Point Senior Center will Soon be Relocated

Powhatan Point seniors can rest easy with the announcement that they will be moving out of their current senior center and into a new one. The old senior center, currently located at 97 Main Street, is in an area that is known for flooding and has several structural and parking issues.
