The Benwood City Council received an update last night on progress towards demolishing the Bellaire Bridge.

City attorney Eric Gordon told Council that part of the holdup was due to the recent change in leadership at the West Virginia Department of Transportation.

Recently, a federal judge in Columbus reaffirmed that the bridge needs to be destroyed.

The US Army Core of Engineers says if the bridge falls into the river they will pay to have it demolished, but because it’s privately owned, no federal government funds can be used.
