A service of remembrance was held in Wheeling on Wednesday as law enforcement, community members and city leaders gathered for National Peace Officers Memorial Day.

It was a ceremony to honor the lives lost in the line of duty. In the state of West Virginia alone, 213 officers total have been killed on the force– 9 of those deaths within the Wheeling Police Department. The most recent in 1971.

Former Steelers cornerback, Mel Blount was the guest speaker for the event and he took a few minutes to thank the men and women in blue.
