A former police officer has been sentenced for theft in office.

Joseph Brophey worked at the St. Clair Township police department in Columbiana County when he falsified timesheets, collecting overtime pay for more than $20,000.

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost also said Brophey tried to cover up the crime during the investigation. In October, he pleaded guilty to theft, breaking and entering and tampering with evidence.

He was sentenced to 12 months in prison and must pay restitution.
