A construction worker is lucky to be alive following a fire at the Wellsburg Bridge construction site on Monday evening.

It happened just before 5:45 p.m. as a team of workers from Flatiron was drilling horizontally under Route 2 when they struck a pocket of natural gas.

Authorities say a worker was cutting a pipe with a torch when natural gas ignited inside of the pipe.

“We contacted the gas company here, and Southwest Energy also, to try to find out who has the gas or did we hit somebody’s well or whatever,” said First Assistant Chief of the Wellsburg Volunteer Fire Department Scott Kins. “He was very lucky. There was a good gas content coming out of the ground, which there’s no smell to it. He had no way of knowing.”

The fire burned under control for about two hours.

Thankfully, no one was injured in the blast.

The West Virginia Department of Highways says that Route 2 will remain closed between County Road 28/49 Hill Road and County Road 67 through at least Tuesday morning.
