Two people have been arrested following the death of a 2-year-old child.

The prosecuting attorney said Aiden Oxley suffered and called the actions of the parents a disgrace.

Melissa Barnes and Kayin Franklin were both arrested and charged with reckless homicide. Both were arraigned in Steubenville Municipal Court Monday afternoon.

Police records show the child was found dead in his crib Saturday.

According to police prosecutor Steve Lamatrice, the child was checked on early Friday morning around 2 a.m. and was not checked on again until around noon.

Following the discovery of the dead child, Barnes allegedly went shopping.

“Do you have other children?,” Judge John J. Mascio asked in the hearing. “Have they been removed from the home by CPS? She has eight children, your honor. The prosecutor is advising you have eight children that have been removed from the home is that correct yes”

“This child suffered,” Lamatrice said. “This is a disgrace. I’m saddened that this is the highest charge I have at this time. I would ask you set the highest bond you can at this time.”

Bond for both Barnes and Franklin is set at $250,000. Both will appear in court next Monday.
