A large fire broke out at the Ergon refinery in Newell Saturday night.

The fire prompted evacuations within a one mile radius of the plant and a large emergency presence from the tri-state area. Residents from nearby homes were evacuated and Route 2 was closed for a few hours.

They got the call from Ergon that they had some type of explosion and a fire so most of the area fire departments responded and then they put out an all call- for more response and by the time i got here, it was still blazing.

Scott Gittings, Hancock County Sheriff

The fire was contained around midnight and no one was injured in the fire.

The CEO of Ergon issued this statement.

Thankfully, there were no injuries. The damage was contained, and our safety protocol was followed. We appreciate the prompt response from the fire departments and EWV employees who came to our aid to extinguish the fire.

Emmitte Haddox, Ergon Chief Executive Officer

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
